Here is a painting I did this past summer. I consider it bad art. I'm only posting it on here to make a point. But...truth is, it's been sitting around the studio for awhile, and it's been growing on me. Maybe one of these days--maybe one of these Art Every Day Month days I'll do something with it. Breathe a little life into it. (Pun intended!)
These babies are the victims of bad art. They are now a part of the black gesso protection agency. They will one day be LOVEd again, and possibly good enough (in my eyes) to leave the studio and make a life out there on their own....as good art.
Here is a page from my art journal.
Bad.
What was I thinking?
It has been contaminating my art journal for quite awhile.
Until just recently when I decided to tissue paper over it...and now it's gonna make a great background to a more heartfelt, fabulous art journal page. Who knows...maybe it will make it onto one of my Art Journal LOVE videos!!!
This is Theo. He believes there is no such thing as bad art.
He believes bad art makes good cushions and he could sleep on an ugly painting all day long.
He also thinks this box makes him look thin.
I raise my paintbrush to you all in a toast:
Here's to years and years of bad art, creativity gone amuck, and black gesso! For it is through our mistakes and ugliness that we learn what beauty is and what not to do again!
Peace & Love.

Good Morning Connie!
I am passing on an award to you :)
http://canadianhomelearning.blogspot.com/2009/11/new-reading-challenge-award-and-500th.html
I love it Ms. Connie Chica! Thank you for sharing your so-called "bad art!" This process of learning some art "techniques" has been what I've been craving for a long time. And, I should know from my many years as a serious dance student that learning technique and new skills is a PROCESS! It is so valuable to know what doesn't work in order to know what does work and to just be easy with it all and to have FUN!
This post is an interesting example of how incredibly subjective "good" and "bad" is when describing art. I'm not saying this to be nice or something. I truly can't see the "bad" in these! But to you they are "bad art."
Thanks for sharing this. The one with the lungs reminds me of how I feel right now with bronchitis. Here's a quote for you: "Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep." ~ Scott Adams
Bad is definitely in the eye of the beholder, or the artist's inner critic:) I like both the lung lady and the journal page before the tissue paper!
I'm with Theo. Nothing I see here is Bad Art. I especially love the black pages and can't wait to see what you do with the cover girl art. Breathe life, always good. LOL. (I read some of my old work and I am beyond-words-embarassed)
I tell my adult art students that they are only really making art if they feel their work is ugly.
Bad ART represents taking a risk to develop your own self-expression.
Go Theo!
Love this post! Bad art is one of those dirty little secrets, but not anymore! I have a few canvases laying around in need of the black gesso... that or a lot of re-working!
Yay for Bad Art !!!!!!It represents steps on the journey, not reaching a destination of any kind. And Yay for black gesso, or collage papers, or scribbles that let you leave that step behind and move on !
I love love love this post, Connie. It gives us all a reminder that we need the dark to see the light.
Happy Wednesday, Artist-Chica !
Bad Art only happens when we are rushing, and pushing and forcing.
Good art takes time to be lazy, and languish for extra long periods of slothful lounging, and dreaming and pausing.
...time to re-purpose and be proud.
Your art is fun and so is your sense of humor. This month Im practicing imperfection for AEDM. I randomly chose your name from Leah's list. I'm glad I did.
Here's to more bad art!
This is much needed. Thank you
I think the Lung Lady was a good start, but it just looks half finished. Don't be too hard on yourself...art is all subjective you know. But hey, at least your cat may like it as a cushion.
My cat loved sleeping on a many of my bad paintings.
Wow! Great posting; so much fun to read! And look at! Hey Theo...wish I could give you some kitty pets!
Oh, Amen. I can't believe how much bad art I produce, it takes courage to share it, usually I share the fact that I've made it. Black gesso is a great idea. So is living with it until you can figure out what other purpose it can serve (such as a cat bed).
Yes! Echoing what you said here! Thank you for these illuminating thoughts on Bad Art.
Theo is a wise cat, and you're a good artist.
Thank you! I made some art today and really enjoyed it. Let go and enjoyed the process! Come by soon! xoxoxo
What great perspective. Thanks for sharing. And you might like to know that what you consider bad art...might not really be bad art in another's eyes. I think your work is pretty darn cool...I wonder what those canvases looked like before black gesso protection!?
Awww Connie,
I think it's so sweet to have scrappers. Here's a thought about ya box. Ya said the child explains what they didn't like about their piece before it goes in the box. Why not make a copy of it, and then when a child picks a picture out to take home they could take the copy of the pic and write on the back "Why they like the pic" This way it helps the child who placed it in the box another point of view on their owrk.PLUS it helps builds their self-esteem! Just me thinking outloud hun. Hope ya day was awesome! OH! and I am in love with ya three"unfinished" pieces. Hugs~ Poe
Your work is truly beautiful...and your "scrappers" idea is wonderful!
You're a wonderful writer about your creative endeavors! Cool idea about the "scrappers"; a lesson in their for me too!
