Scrappers

Posted by Connie at 5:00 AM

Here is a peek into a series of paintings I have started working on.

They are each painted on wood!

AND.....each painting sits on a foundation of what I lovingly call scrappers..and, I must add, none of these paintings are finished yet!

Here is my own personal box of scrappers!

And, for those Lovelies that attended the Creative Dig Workshop this past September, they got to create some Art Journal LOVE with some scrappers I brought for them.

What is this thing you call "scrappers", you ask?

Well, as you most likely know, I teach K-8 art...and sometimes I have kiddos that are unhappy with their art work...so, first we discuss what it is they don't like--and how they could change and grow from this in the future. Then instead of throwing it away or giving it to their great, great aunt Hattie--we put it in a box lovingly called "Scrappers". This is a place students are encouraged to go through regularly to use pieces and parts of pieces for collage, multi media, and any kind of paper sculpture we may create. The fun part too is that there are many times I will hear a student exclaim in pure glee "I can't believe someone put THIS in the scrappers!!!" --and instead of turning the bad art into a piece of their own---they actually keep it and take it home.

I love scrappers....for me, I take alot of the kids scrappers and cut them into squares. I've started attaching them to board and using them as a foundation for my layered paintings. I've even started creating some paper quilts as well!

So...once again.....bad art shows us that it can really be a good thing!

Peace & Love.

What a great idea. I could go through my studio and have an instant box of scrappers! Just kidding but I could get a healthy start! Thanks for sharing your art in progress. I find it such an essential part of creating as an artist myself, to see other artist's stages.

It is empowering for each and all of us to have "scrappers"... what a great reminder and so concrete. Love your paintings-in-progress, too.

As a quilter myself, the prospect of seeing your 'paper quilts' SERIOUSLY jazzes me right now...whenever you're ready...but, SERIOUSLY I can hardly wait!

What an ecologically and psychologically fabulous concept!!! ATTA GIRL!

Love the works in progress. Thanks for sharing them.
Happy Day!

and yes, as a quilter too, like Sheila I know how important those scraps can be...I have been working on a calendar quilt this year just using scraps!

i teach k-8 art too! love the scrappers idea! wish i could incorporate something like that into my classes, but since i teach from an art cart and have to go from room to room, it would be kinda hard since it's usually already pretty loaded down with supplies....that and i don't have much storage room in the teacher workroom. oh well...an idea to file away for when i have my own classroom. :D

love what you've done with the scrappers! your paintings look fabulous! are they still in progress or finished? i think they look wonderful just as they are!!

Scrappers are the most important part of any collective art.

And yes, your series is more than lovely.

Beautiful !!! And I think scrappers are brilliant ! I started by own pile recently when I made a painted journal for a friend and got half way through only to find that the slightly inexpensive paper I used didn't take my dip pen ink well at all. I scrapped the whole thing but have started tearing it up and using it in collages. The gel medium seals it and my pen works ok on top.
No such thing as "bad" art !
Brava, Beautiful Connie !

Beautiful entry. I wish all artists could read this and apply it. Not only to their own work, but when they look at other peoples art and judge it. Big Hugs~Poe

I love the scrappers box idea...when I saw your box I had a twinge of jealousy...wishing I had access to such a bountiful supply of beautiful papers/images. I will work on gathering my own scrappers! I love the hummingbird painting; the colors are fun and soothing and I love the bird's little eye.
