Connie,

I know this is a subject close to your heart and as a parent and a continually growing human being, it is to me too. This guy made me laugh with his passion, if only we all could stand up for ourselves like that. It's a great, big, huge message. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing this brilliant, passionate and highly intelligent point of view with us, Connie ! Here's hoping the the powers that be will hear the message! And if not, I still know that education will re-morph itself into something worthwhile. I thought back to the Native Americans and how they shared their knowledge and prepared their young people for their lives in their environment. A hands one apprenticeship to life...at 44, I would still sign up for classes like that...and I could teach a few myself !
Here's is to learning something new everyday !
Big Love to you !

Great points. As a parent I've definitely considered this on the elementary/secondary level, but not the college level. One thing I'd add is that, if possible, discernment between good and bad information needs to be taught (you can find a lot of disinformation or inaccurate information on the Internet, too).

My "honorary nephew" (long story) posted a link to this video on his facebook a few months ago about K-12. Thought you might find it interesting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_A-ZVCjfWf8

I've been in education for thirty years=--we were talking about these ideas in the 70s and 80s! The big movement for change got stopped by some powerful reactionaries, and now we have test-driven teaching in so many places. Parents need to speak up and demand education for "a whole new mind" (see Daniel Pink).

Good teachers will teach much more than memorization of facts. Good teachers will teach with Bloom's Taxonomy. It says that you learn facts (which are important) and then you move on. You learn how to apply those facts, analyze, assimilate, synthesize, etc. Many teachers out there stick with memorizing facts because they were not taught how to teach otherwise or they are just lazy. I believe that teachers are the difference makers in this debate. You can't really put the entire blame on the system.
